This was my first layout: a 5 X 10 foot table built on 4 inches of foam.  Observe how the road and river run down hill toward the lake. It is fully automated and controlled via JMRI (Java Model Railroad Interface) and Lenz DCC. 13 switches (sometimes called turnouts), 11 block detectors and 26 signal heads. All street lights, building lights, crossing arm, flashing crossing signs and hotel sign controlled via JMRI.  Two magnetic uncouplers can be operated locally or by computer. Nine pairs of IR detectors (Infra red) used for direction of travel. My dog 'Cookie' often liked to lay on my chest while I did some wiring.
